Day 3
For me the best part of day three was looking at the site Wolfram Alpha. It really made me start to think about all of the things that we teach our students…how much of it do they really need to know when they can find it on the web. I would love to switch to much more thinking then computation. What I mean by that is there are some things I would want students to continue to learn. They need to know basic math skills and number sense, but, after that do students still need to know how to graph a quadratic function when the computer or their calculator can do it for them? I would rather have students interpreting the graph, making predictions, or extrapolating other data. Without teaching students the ‘how to do it’ I would love to teach them the ‘what can we do with it.’

WolframAlpha, eh? You're not just saying that just to put a smile on my face, are you? :)
ReplyDeleteSounds like a great reason to try and plan some project based learning opportunities. I would love to talk with you about this - I could surely learn more about math right along with the students!
